History podcasts

Weeks in the archives, ninety minutes recorded, one minute seen.

History shows live or die on the anecdote, and the anecdote is exactly the thing a casual viewer will stop for when they would never start a two part series on the Thirty Years' War. A single strange, sourced detail in a short does more to recruit a new listener than any episode description. The full episode is the payoff; the clip is the reason someone goes looking for it.

What gets in the way

Send the episode; the clips come back cut, captioned and ranked. That is the whole job on your side.

The moments that travel

The detail nobody teachesA specific, odd, sourced fact about daily life or a famous person's habits is what people repeat at dinner that night.
The myth taken apartCalmly showing where a familiar story came from and why it is wrong gives viewers something to argue about in the comments.
The primary source read aloudA letter, a diary line or a court record in the person's own words lands harder than any paraphrase you could give.
The 'and then' turnThe beat where a plan collapses or a messenger arrives late is the natural cliffhanger that sends viewers to the full episode.
The modern echoWhen you point out that a centuries old dispute looks a lot like something in this week's news, people share it without being asked.

Hooks in your show's voice

What we leave out

Avoid clipping a claim about numbers, dates or causes without the caveat you gave right after it, because the shortened version is what people will quote back at you. Be careful with atrocities and recent conflicts: graphic description that is appropriate inside a careful hour can read as glib or baiting when it opens a cold short. Every clip comes with a safety check and its reasons, and nothing goes out until you post it.

Questions

Do the captions handle unfamiliar names and places?

Yes, add names, places and period spellings to Settings > Spelling and they are spelled your way in captions, hooks and titles from the next episode. If one slips through, Change this on the clip fixes the word.

Can you keep the source when I cite one?

Captions are the words actually said, so a book, document or historian you name inside the clip stays in. If the attribution sits just outside the cut, use Change this to cut the clip differently so it is included.

My episodes are long and conversational. Is there enough to clip?

Yes, upload the episode and the Shorts come back scored and ranked with a plain reason each, along with teasers, titles and descriptions. Long conversational episodes carry self-contained stories, and those are what the ranking surfaces.
