Music podcasts

The best thing your guest said is forty minutes in.

Music podcasts live and die on the moment a guest stops promoting and starts telling the truth about a song, a tour or a bad contract. That moment is what a fan of the artist shares, and it is almost never in the first ten minutes. Clips pull it out and put it where people who have never heard of your show, but love the artist, are already looking.

What gets in the way

Send the episode; the clips come back cut, captioned and ranked. That is the whole job on your side.

The moments that travel

The origin of a lyricA guest explaining what a line actually meant gives every fan of that song a reason to stop and listen.
The studio mistake that stayedHappy accidents, wrong takes and broken gear are the stories musicians tell best and listeners remember.
The gear or technique answerA producer or player walking through one specific choice is a clip that other players send to each other.
The industry truthWhen a guest talks plainly about streaming, label deals or touring costs, that candor is rare on camera and it is what people come to your show for.
The host's review verdictCalling an album overrated, or defending one everybody dismissed, is a position a clip can state in ten seconds.

What we leave out

Keep recorded music out of the clip, including the guest's own tracks, unless you already hold the rights to use them, because a clip taken down for a rights claim helps nobody. Be careful with a guest's off hand comments about other artists, unreleased material and release dates; a casual remark in a long conversation reads differently as a thirty second clip with their name in the title. Every clip comes with a safety check and its reasons, and nothing goes out until you post it.

Questions

Our guests play live on the show. Can those performances be clips?

Only if you have the guest's and the publisher's permission to use that performance, which you should confirm before recording. Otherwise the clips come from the conversation, which is where the stories live anyway.

Can the title use the artist's name even if they're a big act?

Yes, if they are on your show, the clip title can say so. What it will not do is use their album art, logos or audio, which keeps you clear of the obvious claims.

We review records, no guests. Does that still work for clips?

Yes. A clear verdict with one reason behind it is a complete clip, a two host argument over a record is even better, and the album you want front and center is simply the one you post first.
