Horror And Scary Stories podcasts

A good scary story earns its ending. A clip can't give it away.

Horror spreads by the line someone cannot stop repeating, and short form is built for a single line delivered well. Your pause, your voice dropping, the first detail that is wrong: those work in thirty seconds without the rest of the story. The clip's job is to make a stranger need to know what happened, and then send them to the episode to find out.

What gets in the way

Send the episode; the clips come back cut, captioned and ranked. That is the whole job on your side.

The moments that travel

The first wrong detailThe moment a normal evening stops being normal is the hook of the whole story, and showing it costs you nothing.
The rule of the storyDo not answer the second knock, do not look at the window: a rule stated plainly makes people need the reason.
Your voice droppingWhen you slow down and lower your voice, viewers lean in, and it works even with no context.
The listener's own storyA real person telling you what happened to them, in their words, is harder to scroll past than any script.
The pause before the lineA held breath on camera before you deliver a line gives the clip a shape of its own.

What we leave out

Never clip the ending or the reveal of a story, and be careful with the middle too: a twist told out of order spoils the episode for anyone who finds the clip first. If a story is drawn from a real crime or involves real victims, keep names and graphic detail out of the clip, and credit the author of any narrated story the same way you did in the episode. Every clip comes with a safety check and its reasons, and nothing goes out until you post it.

Questions

Will the clips spoil my stories?

Clips are ranked on the strongest moment, which can include the turn or the ending, so read each one on your page before posting and drop or recut anything that gives a story away with "Change this". A story you want untouched is safest cut out of the file before you upload.

My show is mostly me narrating to camera in the dark. Is there anything to clip?

Yes. Your delivery is the visual in this niche, and a face half lit with clear captions is exactly the kind of clip that stops people.

Can the clips carry a content warning?

Yes, in practice: say the warning on air and it is captioned word for word in any clip that includes it, and you can paste a warning line into the post text before you post. There is no standing warning line, so it is yours to add each time.
